6. Observe building rules!

The rules are there for a reason! (Not just for having something hang on the wall!)

If the corporation will prescribe a certain color for your blinds, follow it. Building codes or rules help preserve the appearance, value and prestige of the property (this will matter if you want to resell your unit). If smoking is restricted in common areas, obey it. It is a rule that should be observed!

Community regulations range from not putting displays on your doors, having specific hours open for repairs and securing permits for home deliveries. The primary reasons why these rules are implemented is for your own good and safety, and your cooperation will make to ensure all of these things. Whatever they say as long as it is in the books, follow it! That’s the rule.

7. Park your cars properly

Whether or not you purchased a parking slot or pay for common parking areas, make sure that your car is parked to where it is supposed to be! Do not park in any empty slots just like what we are doing in the malls. Do not scout for parking spaces that are not regularly used so you can park at your convenience (I did this once and you don’t want to even know what happened next). A lot of developments have limited number of parking slots, which cause some residents to work around the system. Respect the residents who have paid for the slots even though they are not using it. If you can’t avail one, or there is nothing left, you can ask the administration office for parking slots that can be rented. This is good if you have guests, because they can too park on this slot. Keep in mind that parking areas are common spaces too! Do not litter, leave your trash around! Show respect and professionalism.

8. Do not conceal pets when they are not allowed

A lot of condominium seekers these days are asking if pets are allowed in the community. If pets are allowed, good for you. If not, just respect. If pets are not allowed, don’t think that small or quiet pets are an exemption as long as they are not discovered. You are not only the pet lover who has to make this kind of sacrifice.

9. Keep things private

Be mindful that curtains are down; blinds are closed before you walk around your unit after a fresh shower. A neighbor from an adjoining building might inadvertently get a glimpse of you in your naked glory. For everyone’s sake, cover things up. You are not alone in the building. Always remember that.

10. Respect your neighbor

Even if you want to keep things privately, a simple greeting or nod will not be too much to give to your neighbors. Bowing down your head or acting like you do not see anyone passing by should be your last resort. Observe elevator courtesy by thanking people who hold the elevator for you.

The key to condo living ethics is simply respect. If you want to be respected learn to respect others too! Respect their privacy, respect their unit, and respect the community policies and personnel. Respecting other is the key to live harmoniously in your condominium.
